How can I get the wireless connection to work on my work laptop?

This answer applies to Metropolia staff, not students.
Using External Network
First, follow the instructions for Home and public WiFi in Metropolia laptops - Cisco NAM if you're trying to connect your work laptop to a network other than metropolia-secure.
If my work laptop doesn't connect to the Metropolia wireless network:
Work laptops should automatically connect to the metropolia-secure network on campus.
- Restart your computer.
Reset the network settings to default.
Open the start menu.
Open the Settings menu by clicking on the gear icon > Network & Internet > Status > Network reset
Click Reset now.
Click Yes.
Wait for your computer to restart.
- Contact the helpdesk following good practice.
If multiple wireless networks are not working or no wireless networks are found
- Restart your computer.
- Try reconnecting to the internet.
- Make sure Wi-Fi is enabled.
- Select the No Internet Access icon on the taskbar's right side and ensure that Wi-Fi is enabled. If it's not, enable it by selecting it.
- Try reconnecting to the internet.
- Check if your computer is in airplane mode.
- Disable airplane mode. If it's not enabled, turn it on and then off. Instructions: Turn airplane mode on or off.
- Check the airplane mode switch. Some very old laptops have a physical airplane mode switch on the side that can accidentally be turned on, for example, when the laptop is in a bag.
- Try reconnecting to the internet.
- Re-enable the device driver.
- Open Device Manager.
- Respond to the Confirm Execution window with Yes.
- Click the > sign next to Network adapters.
- Right-click on the wireless network card. The card's name may be something like Intel(R) Dual Band Wireless-AC 7260 or another name that includes the word "wireless."
Click Disable device.
Respond Yes to the confirmation question.
- Right-click on the wireless network card again.
Click Enable device.
- Try reconnecting to the internet.
Reset the network settings to default.
Open the start menu.
Open the Settings menu by clicking on the gear icon > Network & Internet > Status > Network reset
Click Reset now.
Click Yes.
Wait for your computer to restart.
- Try reconnecting to the network.
- Update Windows according to the Windows 10 Version Upgrade instructions.
- Try reconnecting to the network.
If I can't establish a connection to my home's wireless network with a fixed broadband connection
- Try using another device (such as a smartphone) to test the network's functionality.
- Instructions:
- For Android devices: Connect to Wi-Fi networks on your Android device.
- For iPhone devices: Connect to Wi-Fi on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
If the connection works, continue from the section If multiple wireless networks are not working or no wireless networks are found.
- Instructions:
- Ensure that the router/modem cables are properly connected.
- Try reconnecting to the network on your computer.
- Restart the router/modem.
- Disconnect the power cable from the router/modem.
- Some modems have a backup battery. If the modem's lights remain on after unplugging it, remove the battery from the modem.
- Wait for at least 30 seconds.
- If you had to remove the battery from the modem, reinsert it.
Reconnect the modem to the power source. The modem's indicator lights will start blinking. Wait until they stop blinking.
- Try reconnecting to the network on your computer.
- Reset the router/modem.
Consult the router/modem's manual for instructions on resetting the device. This is often done by pressing and holding a dedicated button on the modem for at least 30 seconds. Sometimes the button may be recessed and require a sharp object to press. The button may be labeled "Reset."
- Reset the router/modem.
- Try reconnecting to the network on your computer.
- Seek further assistance from your broadband provider.
If I can't establish a connection to a mobile device's hotspot network
For an Android phone's shared hotspot network
Try reconnecting to the internet after each step.
- Ensure that the mobile data connection on your Android device is working by following the instructions on the page My mobile data connection on my Android phone stopped working, what should I do?.
- Disable power-saving mode on your phone.
- Disable Data Saver.
- Turn off any VPN programs.
For an iPhone's shared hotspot network
- Follow the instructions on the page If Personal Hotspot is not working on your iPhone or iPad (Wi-Fi + Cellular).
Did You Encounter a Problem?
Try temporarily bypassing the problem by using another internet connection, such as your mobile phone's hotspot, eduroam network, or by connecting your laptop directly to the router/modem with an Ethernet cable. Instructions for sharing a hotspot connection:
- Restart your computer and the device where the issue is occurring. Try the function again.
- If the function you are attempting is happening in a web browser, try the function again in an incognito or private window and in a different browser.
- Try searching for a solution on the site of the IT Services by using the following search methods:
- navigation menu of the site (on the left)
- search machine of the wiki (right upper corner)
- a general search engine, for instance Google Search
- alphabetical index
- FAQ
