Setting up email in the Outlook (new) desktop application
This guide applies to setting up the Microsoft Outlook (new) version on devices not maintained by Metropolia. It comes with the Windows 11 operating system but is not the recommended version of Outlook.
We recommend using the Outlook Classic application instead of the Outlook that comes with Windows 11, following the guide: Setting up email in the Outlook desktop application.

Setting up an email account (IMAP)
1. Start Outlook (new).
2. Enter your account in the format username@metropolia.fi and click Continue.
3. Click on Show more and enter the following information:
- Password: Your Metropolia password
- IMAP Incoming server: imap.metropolia.fi Port: 993
- SMTP username: username@metropolia.fi
- SMTP Outgoing server: smtp.metropolia.fi Port: 587
4. Click Continue and wait a moment
5. Click Next.
6. Select No, don't send optional data and click Accept.
7. Click Continue.
Did you encounter a problem?
- Restart your computer and the device where the issue is occurring. Try the function again.
- If the function you are attempting is happening in a web browser, try the function again in an incognito or private window and in a different browser.
- Try searching for a solution on the site of the IT Services by using the following search methods:
- navigation menu of the site (on the left)
- search machine of the wiki (right upper corner)
- a general search engine, for instance Google Search
- alphabetical index
- FAQ
If the problem is not resolved, please contact the helpdesk according to best practices. Always include a full screen screenshot of the issue in your service request.
