Restore files from a network drive

You can recover whole directories or just one or more files. This can be usefull if you have deleted a file or replaced an old file with a wrong or corrupted version.

Data recovery works only on Windows workstations and Windows virtual machines.

Virtualmachines work also on MacOSX and Linux platforms.

In the example below, pictures 1 and 2 illustrate the situation before recovery.

  1. In this picture, the Microsoft Excel taulukko.xlsx is missing from the directory named testi.

Picture 1.

2. In this picture, the Microsoft Excel taulukko.xlsx was modified on 15.5.2012 and now an older version needs to be recovered.

Picture 2.

3. Select the directory, where the original version was and then right-click on Restore previous versions.

Picture 3.

4. Select a directory from the last or earlier date. Here you can also open the directory and copy the file to be recovered directly. First, right-clicking the file and select Copy. Then, browse to the folder where you want the file to copied to, and select Paste. Do not open and modify the file when it is still inside the shadow copy location, because then the changes are not saved to your Home drive or other desired location.

5. After selecting the directory, select Copy... and the window below opens:

6. Find your home drive for restoration (Z:) and copy the file to the correct location. Be careful: do not replace any needed file. Create a new directory in your home directory by selecting Make New Folder and name the directory e.g. Palautus (Restore).

Picture 6.

7. Select the new directory that you just named Palautus and select Copy. Now the directory to be restored with its contents is copied into the Palautus directory.

8. In this picture, see the original directory named testi (the fourth directory from the bottom) and the restored directory inside ( or below) the Restore directory. The Microsoft Excel taulukko.xlsx, modified 17.4, can now be copied to its desired location.
