Windows 10 Quick Guide
Starting programs
1. Open the Start menu by clicking on the Start icon.
2. Start any program by clicking on a program icon. Programs are grouped in the right pane: Browsers are located in the upper left corner and Microsoft Office programs are located in the upper right corner.
3. If you cannot find a program in any group, click on All apps link in the bottom of Start menu. You will get a list of all programs in alphabetical order.
4. If you still cannot find a program, click on the magnifying glass to the right of Start menu. The magnifying glass is actually a good primary means of finding and starting programs
5. Type the name or part of it in the Search Windows field.
6. Start the program by clicking on it once.
Start and shut down the computer
1. Click on the Start menu icon.
2. Click on Power button.
3. To shutdown the computer, click on Shutdown. If you you want to restart the computer, click on Restart.
Logging out, locking the computer and changing the user
1. Click on the Start menu icon.
2. Your name is shown in the top of Start menu. Click on your name.
3. To lock the computer, click on Lock.
4. If you want to log out, click on Sign out.
5. If you want to let another person use the computer for a while but don't want to log out of the session yet, change users by clicking on Switch account. Your session will stay open in the background, so use the feature only for a temporary user change.
Connect to a projector or an external display
These instructions apply to a situation where you bring your laptop to a classroom, an auditorium, or a conference room to show picture using the projector. These instructions also apply when you connect your computer to a docking station to use its external displays.
1. Connect the VGA cable or HDMI cable to the laptop. The cable is placed on a desk or podium.
2. If there is a switch on or under the desk, you may have to select the setting/source B on it. See if there are instructions. In most rooms you do not have to do anything to the switch.
3. On the laptop, press Windows+P. (The Windows key is in the bottom row of the keyboard with the Windows logo on it.) Keep the Windows key pressed while you press the P key.
4. Click on Duplicate in the menu that appears on the right side of the screen.
Change the default printer
If your print jobs are going to a wrong printer, change your default printer as follows.
1. Click on the magnifying glass icon in the bottom left corner of the screen.
2. Type the word printers in the "Search Windows" field.
3. Click on the Printers & Scanners icon that appears in the menu.
4. Click on Printers & Scanners.
5. Click on the printer that you want to set as the default printer.
6. Click on the Set as default button under the printer.
Install software as self-service (Software Center)
1. To ensure that you have all the latest programs, click on Check for new apps in Start menu.
2. In Start menu, click on Software Center.
3. Check the box in front of the software that your want installed.
4. Click on the Install selected button. The programs are installed in the background, and you can continue working.
5. The status column helps you monitor the installation of each program.
Did you encounter a problem
- Restart your computer and the device where the issue is occurring. Try the function again.
- If the function you are attempting is happening in a web browser, try the function again in an incognito or private window and in a different browser.
- Try searching for a solution on the site of the IT Services by using the following search methods:
- navigation menu of the site (on the left)
- search machine of the wiki (right upper corner)
- a general search engine, for instance Google Search
- alphabetical index
- FAQ
