Copying a Folder to the Network Drive

This guide demonstrates how to copy a folder from a Mac computer to a network drive.

The functionality of this guide requires that the Mac you are using is managed by the IT department.

The example used in this guide is the Desktop folder of a local user account on the Mac.

BEFORE COPYING

Make sure that the source folder is not too large to fit on the destination drive.

You can find instructions for checking the size of a file or folder and the capacity of the network drive here:

Checking the information of a file, folder, or network drive

  1. Ensure that the icon for your network drive home folder (Z drive) is visible on your desktop.

    1. If the icon is not visible, first run the program "OpenMyNetworkHome."
Once your Z network drive appears on the desktop, you can continue.

  2. From your computer’s home folder, select the desired folder; in this example, it is the Desktop.

  3. Drag the selected folder over the network drive icon on your desktop and release it.

Existing File

If there is already a file with the same name on the network drive, a prompt will appear asking if you want to "replace it."

Remember that choosing to replace the item with a newer version will delete all older files with the same name.

If you are certain that the old item can be replaced, confirm and proceed with copying.

If you do not want to replace the folder on the network drive, you must rename the existing folder on the network drive before copying.

The copying process will take some time, depending on the size of the item being copied.

Did you encounter a problem?

  1. Restart your computer and the device where the issue is occurring. Try the function again.
  2. If the function you are attempting is happening in a web browser, try the function again in an incognito or private window and in a different browser.
  3. Try searching for a solution on the site of the IT Services by using the following search methods:
    1. navigation menu of the site (on the left)
    2. search machine of the wiki (right upper corner)
    3. a general search engine, for instance Google Search
    4. alphabetical index
    5. FAQ

If the problem is not resolved, please contact the helpdesk according to best practices. Always include a full screen screenshot of the issue in your service request.
