Changes in printing

PaperCut software will be installed on workstations maintained by Metropolia IT Services before the fall. The software enables the use of multifunction printers’ additional features and it displays on the workstation the user’s remaining credit. The installation does not require any action on the users’ part.

In August 2012 multifunction printer fees will be reduced from last year:

In addition to lower fees, IT Services also gives each student one euro worth of credit so that students can try the multifunction printers without an initial deposit.

IT Services offers also the possibility to print via a web browser. For more information, see https://itservices.metropolia.fi/display/itservices/PaperCut+Web+Print

For the moment, the service is open within the Metropolia network, i.e. on school workstations and in the wireless network. The operability of the service and making it accessible from outside of the network will be examined during the fall.

For more information on printing and the use of multifunction printers, see https://tietohallinto.metropolia.fi/display/itservices/Printing%2C+copying+and+scanning

Staff members’ credit will be set to zero in August. We will start the fall semester with a clean slate, so to speak.
Uultifunction printers’ utilization rate will be examined three months after the beginning of school. If there are users with exceptionally high usage, the matter will be discussed with such users and their supervisors.

New desktop computer setups

During the summer, IT Services has purchased 850 classroom and staff computers. The computer setup is designed to better meet current needs. In other words, energy efficiency requirements, components and displays are more efficient that before. Accordingly, a separate graphics card and DVD drive are not included as standard equipment.

Why the change?

With the progress of technology and media moving to network, the need for DVD drives has diminished essentially and DVD-drives are no longer needed in classrooms. In addition, a significant amount of money is saved. DVD drives will be installed in classroom presentation machines, in auditoria and for staff as need arises.

Displays are now 1080p LED displays, better suiting the current media standard.

Where do I get a DVD drive?

You can borrow a DVD drive at the helpdesk for occasional use. For continuous use you should make a service request at hd.metropolia.fi
