Microsoft Lync 2010 application has been installed on Metropolia staff-computers. 

With Lync you can send instant messages to your Metropolia colleagues and arrange audio-video meetings with Metropolia colleagues. With Lync you can also arrange audio-video conferences with people outside of Metropolia (the other participants will need Lync Attendee application which is free).
Lync is installed automatically on your Metropolia staff computer. At the beginning  as sign-in name is your Metropolia email address.

Lync training will be arranged and the schedule can be found in Tuubi training calender towards the end of the week. For more information, contact Pekka Schering.

The personnel department can arrange separate training session for groups on demand.

To use Lync you need also headset with microphone and optionally a webcam (not necessary).

Make a hepdesk request of  headset with microphone and webcam.

Mac users please make a hepdesk  request  of Lync.

Use of Multifunction devices in projects

Projects that involve members with external user account and students now have a temporary printing solution. A more permanent solution is still under developement.

The project manager makes a requisition for top-up cards at http://hd.metropolia.fi. He requisitions a necessary number of cards and distributes them to the project members as needed.

The project manager also keeps a record of the cards.

Billing is handled via internal billing.

Windows 7 and Office 2010 SP1 updates in Agricolankatu and Bulevardi


Windows 7 and Office 2010 Service Pack1 updates will be installed on staff computers in Agricolankatu and Bulevardi

on Monday 6th February 2012 beginning at 8:45 pm.


Computers will restart after the updates but you will be notified 5 minutes in advance. Save all open documents then.

Phishing is a common experience for email users these days.  Metropolia email users often receive requests for their network/email passwords, user IDs, and other private data.  Some of these emails can be very convincing and appear to be from Metropolia ITS Staff.

However, you should know that ITS will never, ever request your password!  Emails requesting your password or other personal data should simply be DELETED upon receipt.

Below are newest messages of phishing emails received here at Metropolia and should be deleted upon receipt.

Computer classroom printers will be removed in Myyrmäki during week 8, i.e. February 20-24, 2012.


After this free black & white printing will be possible in printing points which are located here:

  • A2072, library computer workspace (open during library hours)
  • 2nd floor lobby, adjacent to A203
  • B143, 1st floor project space
  • B236, 2nd floor project space

In these rooms students use their own printer paper.

Toshiba multifunction printing continues to be a fee based service for students.

Toshiba multifunction printers can print, copy, and scan both black & white and color.

Printing and copying is fee based but scanning is free.

A decision has been made in IT Services to reduce the number of classroom printers and to replace them with printing points.

In each location, depending on the size of the location, 1 to 5 printing points will be set up for students. Toshiba multifunction printers will be also available. Students will always have free access to the printing points. Printing services are not reduced and students can continue to print black & white for free in each location. As before, students will need to bring their own printer paper for black & white printing.

Printing with multifunction printers continues to be fee based. Multifunction printers can be used for printing, copying and scanning, both black & white and color. Printing and copying is fee based but scanning is free. New multifunction printers have been acquired in the beginning of 2012.

Timetable

The use of printing points has been tested in Leppävaara where approximately 30 classroom printers have been replaced by three student printing points.
Myyrmäki will be next, where 3 to 4 printing points will be set up.
A more detailed timetable will be announced later. In some locations service models will be examined during the Spring and Summer 2012.


Reasons for the change in the process

A recent customer satisfaction survey revealed dissatisfaction with printer usability, Green Office and the high cost of the current operations model. This has played a role in the change. Centralized printing services will help to guarantee better reliability.

The new platform stabilizes the Tube


We expect the new server platform with changes to stabilize the Tube.


The Tube was installed on a new server platform in the beginning of the year.

The performance has substantially improved and we are not expecting further

disruptions due to high loads.


The network infrastructure at Metropolia has been to rebuilt raise the reliability to

the next magnitude.


Fine tuning of these changes has been and will be done. There might still be

maintenance breaks with prior notice. There have been disturbances which

have been rectified.


Daily Tube sign-ons January 2012


The next version of the Tube will go through the final performance test during week seven.

Following this the opening of the test version for everyone to explore will be deciced.

The decision to upgrade to the new version including the timing can then be taken.

Staff and students use the same devices which means that students now have more devices available to them. The list below shows the locations of Toshiba multifunction printers by building. The list also show which devices are reserved for staff only.

Notice: Printing and copy cards activated in 2011 must be activated again in 2012.

In addition, a new practice is being tested. Free black and white A4 copying is possible in all locations but the number of printers is reduced in order to achieve better efficiency. The number of classroom printers is reduced and printing points are centralized in common areas. As before, students must use their own printer paper.

There have been occurences of irrititating beeping sound from Toshiba MFPs on regular intervals after installing the card readers.

We are working on the problem with the supplier and ask for your patience until we can solve the issue.
