Connect Laptop to Universal Docking Station
Old or new laptop?
New laptops have a USB-C connector. 
You can connect a new laptop to the connector without an adapter. New laptops are also charged when connected to a docking station.
Old laptops are connected to a USB port using an adapter that is attached to the cable. The laptop needs its own adapter for charging.
Windows 10
Universal docking stations do not support well Windows 7 laptops. If your laptop is running the Windows 7 operating system, make a service request to Helpdesk at https://hd.metropolia.fi and ask Helpdesk to update the operating system to Windows 10.
Apple macOS computers
With a Mac laptop universal docking stations work the best when the laptop is running macOS Mojave 10.14 or a newer macOS.
If you laptop is running an older macOS, please update the operating system using Managed Software Center with the (MSC) software. Here is a direct link to the MSC instructions.
Old laptops
1. Look for a cable with a USB adapter in the workstation:
2. Connect your own charger to your laptop. If you do not connect the charger, the laptop will not be charged, and your laptop will run in the docking station only when the lid is open.
3. Connect the docking station USB-C connector to the USB adapter:
4. Connect the adapter's ordinary USB connector to our laptop's ordinary USB port. (An ordinary USB port is a port that a USB key can be connected to.)
5. Wait patiently approximately 30 seconds. You laptop's Desktop will appear on the workstation display(s) and you can use the workstation mouse and keyboard:
New laptops
1. Connect the docking station's USB-C connector directly to your laptop's USB-C port.
2. Wait patiently approximately 30 seconds. Your laptop's Desktop will appear on the workstation's displays and you can use the workstation's mouse and keyboard.
Wrong aspect ratio?
If the picture does not extend all the way to the edges of the screen the aspect ratio is most like wrong. Usually wrong aspect ratio means that the screens are in Duplicate mode in which case aspect ratio is determined on the basis of the laptops own display.
If you want to get the best possible resolution and aspect ratio set your computer to the Extend mode or the Second screen only mode:
1. Press the Windows+P key combination.
2. Select Extend or Second screen only.

Separate docking stations for guests and students
If you are using a your own laptop instead of a Metropolia laptop, do this:
1. Do not connect your own laptop to a Metropolia staff workspace docking station.
2. You are allowed to connect your own laptop to a guest workspace docking station.
3. Download and install the required driver from https://www.displaylink.com/
Apple macOS laptops
Universal docking stations support the best newer Apple macOS laptops that have a USB-C connector (models from 2016 onward).
Newer laptops with a USB-C connector are also charged via the same connector. Older Mac laptops need a separate charger compatible with the laptop (MaqSafe 1 or MaqSafe 2).
Older models from 2014-2015 can be connected to a universal docking station with the USB adapter that is attached to the docking station's cable.
For best compatibility, use the macOS 10.14 operating system and DisplayLink driver 5 or later.
If the docking station does not work
1. Disconnect the docking station cable from your laptop, and the reconnect it.
2. If the above does not solve the problem, restart your computer.
3. If the docking station still does not work, make a service request at https://hd.metropolia.fi or send email to helpdesk at metropolia.fi
What is a universal docking station?
A universal docking station is compatible with all laptops regardless of laptop make and model.
