Adopt these practices after an incident

1) Create a strong password and use passphrases

Use a password that includes lowercase and uppercase letters, numbers, and special characters. Never share your password with anyone—if someone asks for it, they are likely a cybercriminal. Metropolia’s IT services will never request your password. A passphrase (for example, an easy‑to‑remember sentence) helps you remember your password more easily. The recommended password length is 8–15 characters

2) Use unique passwords for different services and rely on a password manager

Do not use the same password for Metropolia services as you do for other digital services, such as social media, online stores, or your personal email.
Prefer password manager applications, which help you securely store and manage your passwords.

3) Multi‑factor authentication adds an extra layer of protection

With multi‑factor authentication (MFA), you are required to verify your identity using a second factor in addition to your username and password. Many service providers—such as social media platforms, online stores, and email services—now offer MFA as an additional security feature.

4) Report all incidents to the Helpdesk

If you forget your password or accidentally click a suspicious link, change your password immediately using strong authentication at salasana.metropolia.fi.
Report all irregularities to Metropolia’s Helpdesk.

5) Be alert to social engineering

Social engineering is criminal behavior in which an attacker attempts to trick a victim into revealing sensitive information. The attacker may appeal to the victim’s helpfulness or lack of knowledge. Always be critical if someone asks you for information or requests actions that seem unusual.

6) Keep your device and application updates up to date

Criminals exploit outdated software and services that contain security vulnerabilities. Updates fix these weaknesses and improve your protection level. Ensure that your operating system, applications, and web browser are always up to date.

7) Complete Metropolia’s data protection and information security training – Digital Security Starter

Digital Security Starter provides you with essential skills to identify and manage digital risks in your studies, work, and free time.
The training aims to increase awareness of the importance of digital security in daily life—at home, at work, and in education.
