Installing Microsoft Office on a Home Computer
Preliminary Steps
1. Accept Metropolia's cloud service terms.
2. You can log in to the download site approximately two hours after accepting the cloud service terms.
Downloading and Installing Office on a Windows Computer
This instruction does not apply to Metropolia-managed devices
Please do not install Office according to this instruction on Metropolia-managed computers, but only on a personally owned computer. Microsoft Office is preinstalled on Metropolia computers. You can find instructions for updating Microsoft Office 365 on Metropolia-managed computers here. You can find instructions for updating Microsoft Office 2019 on Metropolia-managed computers here.
1. Start your web browser.
2. Go to https://login.microsoftonline.com/3. Enter your username in the format username@metropolia.fi (not your email address, but your username)

4. Enter your password below the prefilled username@metropolia.fi and sign in.

5. Click the button in the upper left corner → More apps → Install apps → Microsoft 365 apps

6. Click the Install Office button.
8. Select Save file. If the service asks for a product key, answer Continuing contract and enter your username in the format username@metropolia.fi (not your email address, but your username)
IMPORTANT WARNING!!!
During the installation or when signing in to Office, the computer will ask Allow organization to manage your computer / Salli organisaatiosi hallinnoida tietokonettasi. Do not allow it. You must absolutely clear the checkbox shown next to this question. If you leave the checkbox selected, it may interfere with your computer's operation in many different ways!
If you accidentally left the checkbox selected, you can fix it as follows:
1. Go to Windows Settings.
2. Select Accounts.
3. Select Access work or school.
4. If you see a Metropolia account, remove it.

9. When the file has finished downloading, run it. How this is done depends on your computer's settings.
10. The installer will start and guide you through the installation to the end.
11. Start an Office application. When the application asks for your username, enter your own username and add "@metropolia.fi" to the end. For a person named Matti Meikäläinen, the correctly formatted username could be, for example, "matmeik@metropolia.fi", not "matti.meikalainen@metropolia.fi". Sign in with your Metropolia password.
12. If, as described in the previous step, the Office applications do not ask for your username the first time they are started, or if you have signed in incorrectly, sign in again. For example, in Word this can be done by going to File -> Account -> Sign out -> Sign in.
Downloading Office for Non-Windows Computers
Apple iOS devices (iPad and iPhone)
- If you do not have a personal Apple ID, create one at https://www.apple.com

- Download the Office applications from Apple's App Store.
Android devices (for example Samsung or Huawei tablets and smartphones)
- If you do not have a personal Google account, create one at www.google.com
- Download Word, Excel, and PowerPoint from the Google Play app store.
The tablet operating system must be Android 4.4, that is, KitKat or newer. Other requirements are a 7-inch display, one gigabyte of RAM, and an ARM processor. Therefore, the applications are not available for some older Android tablets.
Linux: Office software is not available for Linux.
However, you can use all the most important Office services with any modern web browser (Chrome, Chromium, Firefox, etc.)
Internet Connection and License
- Microsoft Office 365 checks the validity of your license every 30 days. The check is performed over the internet. If your computer's internet connection is unavailable for more than 30 days, the license will stop working. If this happens, reconnect your computer to the internet and start Office 365.
- You can install the Office 365 Apps package on a maximum of five computers.
- You can manage your licenses at https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/gg982959(v=office.15).aspx

You can find the answer in a separate instruction: How do I make sure I haven’t accidentally given Metropolia permission to manage my computer?
Did You Encounter a Problem?
- Restart the device where the problem occurs.
- Helpdesk does not provide support services for your own devices and is not responsible for faults occurring on them, even if they are related to software provided by Metropolia.
- If Office 365 does not work on your device, you can, for example, completely uninstall it by following the instructions found on Microsoft's website at https://support.office.com/en-ie/article/uninstall-office-from-a-pc-9dd49b83-264a-477a-8fcc-2fdf5dbf61d8, and then reinstall the software according to this instruction.
- If you notice faults in Microsoft's service, sign-in, or other services provided by Metropolia, report the issue to the Helpdesk at https://hd.metropolia.fi
Problem: When you start the program, the following error message appears on the screen: "The program can't start because api-ms-win-crt-runtime-l1-1-0.dll is missing"
Solution: Install the missing Visual C++ 2015 libraries, which you can find at https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=48145. On a 64-bit computer, you can install both packages.
Problem: Office 365 activation does not succeed.
Solution: Check that your computer's clock is set correctly.
